As hundreds stood witness to the raging flames leaping out of Stephens Court at 18,Park Street,a 25-year-old daily wagers exceptional show of selflessness and courage gave Kolkata a new hero on Tuesday.
Raj Mullick (25),a resident of 29,Ryod Street, rescued as many as twelve people from the fourth and fifth floors of the building even before fire officials arrived on the scene. I came to the building around 1 pm. There was no fire tender around and smoke was billowing out of the top floors. I saw people crying for help and jumping out of balconies, Mullick told The Indian Express.
And while firemen used hydraullic ladders to reach the high floors,Mullick reached there scaling pipes and railings, all barefoot, and helped firemen fix ladders and rescue ropes. I saw five persons huddled up in a balcony on the fifth floor. I helped them came down using ropes. There was another group of people on the fourth floor, said Mullick, adding that he helped people reach the ladders, from where they found their way down to safety.
So,what prompted Mullicks act of daredevilry?
I could not see people jump out of the building. I am poor man and I dont even have a job. I dont know whether I have done something great, said the 25-year-old,who incidentally had a day off from work today. Those who were witness to his rescue efforts were all praises for Mullick. He has shown exemplary courage. The firemen came much later. He saved many lives today, said a local shopkeeper.
After spending nearly the entire day at the site,Mullick returned to his Ryod Street residence in the evening to a heros welcome from his fellowmen.
