Taking a tough stand, the UT Administration has asked the contractual teachers sitting on hunger strike to resume their official duties as soon as the schools re-open after the summer break or be ready to face termination of services. The Administration has clarified that the services of the employees cannot be regularised in view of the directions of the Supreme Court.
The court has allowed the UT Administration to grant relaxation only in the age limit of new recruitments for teachers. The teachers, however, have been demanding exemption from the test which is being conducted to hire 536 teachers. The government, on the other hand, cannot exempt the contractual employees from appearing for the written test, which is a mandatory condition for appointment to a regular post of a school teacher.
It is, however, likely that the services of contractual employees will not be terminated since even after the recruitment process, more than 400 posts remain vacant.
The Administration has already granted an age relaxation of five years and is also willing to consider further age relaxation whenever new advertisements are given out for further recruitment to bring more contractual employees in the fold.
The Administration has also directed the Selection Committee to give due weightage to experience of the teachers. An increase in salary may also being considered.
