International collections help JTHJ shore up the numbers while SOS remains a desi hit

Diwali, which was celebrated last Tuesday, saw the clash of titans at the box-office with the late Yash Chopra's last directorial film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) vis-a-vis Ajay Devgn's production, Son Of Sardaar (SOS). While JTHJ with its cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma was a romantic film, SOS, a Ajay Devgn-Sonakshi Sinha starrer, was a comic caper.

"Both the films belonged to two different genres and thus, there was no scope for them to eat into each other's business. In fact, if we combine the duo's second day collections, then the figures gain historic significance in Indian cinema," says trade analyst Amod Mehra.

As per Komal Nahta's trade report on his website koimoi.com, Jab Tak... collected ` 15 crore on Day One, ` 19.5 crores on Day Two and ` 14.5 crores on Day Three. But the fourth day, Friday saw an all-time low of ` 11 crore, which was also the collection on the fifth day. On Day 6, it dipped to 10 crore notching up a total of ` 81crore in the opening week. According to YRF, the worldwide collections were ` 41.7 crore making the grand total ` 122 crore. However, according to Nahta's version on his website, given its high production cost, the film is yet to be declared a hit.

Son Of Sardaar, which emerged as the first choice of single screens in circuits like Delhi, U.P., Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar, collecting ` 10 crore on its opening day, ` 16 crore on the second day, and ` 12.05 on the third day; the fourth day here, however, also registered an all-time low of ` 9.25 crore which dipped to ` 8.5 crore on the fifth day, staying at a modest ` 8.25 crore on the sixth day garnering a total of ` 64.05 crore. Eros did not report the international collections for the film.
