The Jadavpur University has come up with more stringent norms for its PhD programme. At a special executive council meeting on Wednesday, the university decided that PhD candidates who have not qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) and State eligibility Test (SET) will have to appear in an entrance examination and interview before being registered for PhD programme.
Even candidates who have made subsequent progress in research work but have not completed the programme will have to re-register in the programme under new regulations. The university has set up two committees — a research committee and a doctoral committee — to look into the research works. While the research committee will examine the progress of the research at micro level on department specific and candidate specific development, the doctoral committee will finally award degrees to the students.
“It will be necessary for the students to do course work, attend seminars and publish papers in national journals before the completion of their programmes,” said Partha Pratim Biswas, a senior executive council member of the university. “The students will have to mention these activities also with the thesis for getting the degrees,” he added.
The university has made the modificationse keeping in mind the July 11 regulations of the University Grants Commission.
“If a student is not keen on carrying on with the research, he can approach the doctoral committee of the university and choose to quit the project. Even if a guide feels that a candidate is not able to continue with his research work, he can approach the doctoral committee and urge stalling of the project,” said an executive council member of the university.
