Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Siddharth Patel on Monday dedicated the renovated Town Hall in Junagadh to Shamaldas Gandhi, who had won Junagadh state by leading an army called Arzi Hukumat (Temporary Government) on November 9,1947.
Addressing the members of the Congress-led Junagadh Municipal Corporation and prominent citizens,Patel spoke about the importance of the day when the Nawab of Junagadh, who had wanted his state to accede to Pakistan, was made to flee by the forces of Shamaldas.
After taking over Junagadh,Shamaldas Gandhi had formed a temporary government with himself as chief minister and Dayashankar Dave and Pushpaben Mehta as cabinet ministers.
Junagadh remained a Centrally administered province till 1949 when it was merged with the then Saurashtra state,a part of the Indian Union.
