Just 2 kg of cocaine,not 104: ANC sets record straight

A day after the Mumbai Police Commissioner released annual crime figures for the city,an embarrassing goof-up has emerged with the Anti-Narcotics Cell rubbishing figures showing a near 100-fold increase in the quantity of cocaine seized in 2010 over 2009.

According to the annual report,the ANC seized 1.2 kg cocaine worth Rs 35.31 lakh in 2009. The figures went up to 104.98 kg,worth Rs 82.81 lakh,in 2010.

Sunil Paraskar,DCP of ANC which falls under the Mumbai Police Crime Branch,said they have not seized more than 2 kg cocaine,worth Rs 2 crore,last year. But he clarified that in 2009 they did seize 1.12 kg of the drug. “There has been a mistake as 104 kg has not been seized across the country in 2010,” said Paraskar.

Rajnish Seth,Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order),said,“The figures have been corroborated by the Joint Commissioner of Crime Branch.” The report states the ANC arrested 30 people in 2010 for possession of cocaine and made 19 cases while in 2009 the ANC had arrested 36 persons and made 25 cases.

As per the report,the ANC seized 2,103.53 kg of ganja in 2010 and arrested 56 people for possessing ganja under 37 cases. Heroin,charas and morphine seizures showed a decline.
