  • Kafeel Ahmed, who drove the Jeep that was crashed into the Glasgow airport terminal, spent five months working as a design engineer at an IT services outsourcing company in Bangalore following his return from the UK in late 2005.

Confirmation of Kafeel’s presence in the city in December 2005 has resulted in re-opening of investigations into the Indian Institute of Science terror attack of December 28, 2005 that resulted in the death of a mathematics professor, police sources said.

Kafeel was employed at the $120 million global IT services company Infotech Enterprises, headquartered in Hyderabad, between December 2005 and July 2006, company spokesperson K S Susindra said.

The company employed Kafeel on the basis of his qualifications including an MPhil degree in aeronautical engineering from the Queens University in Belfast, the company spokesperson said.

It employed Ahmed at the company’s office in Koramangala in the southern part of Bangalore, around 10 km from his family’s home in the city.

“It is still not clear if the Kafeel Ahmed who worked with us is the same person who is lying in a hospital in Scotland. Though there are matches, it would be premature for us to say a final word on it,” the company spokesperson said.

“We cannot disclose the project he was working on. He was a design engineer which is a position one level above entry,” Susindra said.

The records provided by Kafeel Ahmed show that he is the son of two doctors, that he last studied aeronautical engineering in Ireland, pursued his mechanical engineering in Karnataka, the company official said — exactly the profile of the UK terror suspect.
