Though Mohinder Kaila missed out on a well-deserved century by just one run, the smile on his face after steering Punjab Panthers to a thrilling ten-run victory over Mumbai Superstars showed how the win was more important to him than the personal milestone in the Cricket Premier League played in Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3 on Friday night.
Earlier, the Punjab Panthers team batted first and scored 177 for 1 in the allotted 18 overs as the match was delayed due to thick fog and cold. Mohinder Kaila was in smashing form as he hit a blistering 99 off mere 62 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four towering sixes. Together with Hari Ahluwalia (53 off 41), he took on the opposition bowlers. Chasing the target, Mumbai Superstars were restricted to 167 for 3 in 18 overs. Talwinder (42) and Gurjeet Walia (46 not out) tried to accelerate the run-rate but the task was too much for them. Sahil Nibber bagged all the three wickets for the winning team.
Mumbai Superstars, however, won the match by 35 runs against Hyderabad Hunters that they played on Saturday. The Mumbai outfit batted first and posted 134 for 6 in 15 overs. Harpal top scored with 33-ball 57 runs. In reply, Hyderabad Hunters were restricted to 99 for 7 in 15 overs. Sandeep Singh bagged three wickets to put a break on the run chase. Manzoor Ahmed top scored with 42 runs.
In another match, Rajasthan Riders thrashed Haryana Hawks by eight wickets. The Haryana team batted first and scored 87 for 7 in 12 overs. Rajasthan Riders achieved the target in 11.3 overs for the loss of two wickets. The last match was won by Punjab Panthers as they humbled Kanpur Kings by ten wickets. Kanpur Kings were restricted to 75 for 5 in 12 overs when they batted first. The Punjab team scored 77 without losing any wicket.
