For the first time in the state,a unique step is being taken to check environmental pollution. Not only is the Kala Sanghia drain being cleaned but also its sludge would be disposed of in a scientific way at Nimbuan,a place in Dera Bassi, near Chandigarh instead of being dumped (sludge) on the banks of the drain as was being done during the cleaning of drains and nullhas in the state earlier.

More than Rs 1 crore would be spent on the cleanliness of the entire drain and carrying its sludge to Nimbuan.

Nimbuan is a village in Dera Bassi (district Patiala) where a ‘Common Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility’ plant has been set up by the state government, said Executive Engineer Punjab Pollution Control Baord (PPCB) Harbir Singh while adding that government with the help from some private firms has been disposing health hazardous waste there.

The expenditure of cleanliness and disposal of sludge of the drain would be borne by both Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) and the drainage department.

The drainage department sources said that to take the sludge, which would be around lakhs of quintals to Nimbuan would be a great challenge.

It is learnt that such orders of cleaning the drain and disposing of its sludge with scientific manner were issued by the Commissioner Jalandhar division SR Ladhar to both drainage department and MCJ.

This is for the first time in the state that the sludge of any drain would be disposed of in scientific manner so as to avoid any threat to health and environment, said commissioner Ladhar.

“After cleaning the drain if the poisonous sludge would be dumped in open on the sides of drain then it would again flow into the drain during the rainy season resulting in wastage of money and polluting the drain again,” said Commissioner Ladhar.

“Government had approved over Rs. one crore for the cleaning of drain,of which Rs 57 lakh would be spent by the drainage department while remaining amount is to be paid by the MCJ as MCJ also responsible for creating pollution in the drain by throwing untreated sewer water into it,” added Ladhar.

It may be noted that Kala Sanghia drain was blocked by the people of various villages from Doaba and Rajasthan under the leadership of Baba Bulbar Singh Seechewal.
