In a breach of protocol former President A P J Abdul Kalam, who is exempted from security checks due to his status, was frisked by an American airlines at the international airport here before boarding the aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered a probe into the incident involving the ground security staff of Continental Airlines which subjected Kalam to security check before he was to board a Newark-bound flight on April 24. "The incident took place on April 24 at the Indira Gandhi international airport when Kalam was travelling to the US. He was treated like an ordinary passenger," sources close

to Kalam said. They said Kalam did not take up the issue with the government. "It is the airline policy to check everyone. They never listen to any Indian agency," they said.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is investigating the matter and action will be taken against whosoever is found responsible. "I just got to know about the incident. We will ask for corrective action and we will ask the concerned people to apologise," he told reporters here. Describing the incident as a "normal security procedure", the airline Public Relations Officer Aparna said "there is no special rule for VIPs and VVIPs. This is the process the airline adheres to."

The former president also had to "surrender" before the staff for a complete body check, the sources claimed. Aparna said Kalam was "very cooperative" and "he happily underwent the entire process". DIG CISF (Airport Security) Udyan Banerjee said the first level of security check, which is conducted by the force, was waived but a second level of checking is done by the airlines.

Former President FriskedBy: Milton D'Silva | 22-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward What is all this fuss about? The ever humble man himself is not outraged...security procedures have to be observed for all passengers...otherwise these are meaningless. But the we are like that only, right? Here even a mere corporator wants VVIP status!
Conti is guiltyBy: Aditya Singh | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Indian President and a Gentleman like Dr. Kalam being frisked, it happens with all of us all the time and we don’t mind rather are happy that they are serious about security but Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam should have been an exemption for sure, India and Indians should feel insulted, not to Suggest so but the Political goons are not targeting Continental's office and properties, which they would have even if some minor regional leader (Actually not leader but politician) would have been targeted. Conti should be punished for this, I will not travel with them even if they are the cheapest some day but that’s not enough, they should be grounded in India till everyone learns to respect our "respected citizens" too or they tender apology (the least that can be done)
Frisking of Former PresidentBy: viswanathan | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward IF THERE ARE SELF RESPECTING INDIAN TRAVELLERS AROUND IN THS COUNTRY THEY SHOULD BOYCOTT CONTINENTAL FOR THIS AND AIR FRANCE FOR THEIR RACISM. LET US SEE HOW MANY SUCH INDIANS ARE AROUND . THERE IS NO POINT IN NON TRAVELLING INDIANS HOWLING AS IT IS NOT EFFECTIVE . LET US SEE HOW MANY PATRIOTIC RICH INDIANS ARE THERE.IT IS TIME WE DEVELOPED A SPINE . THE ATC SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED THE FLIGHT TO TAKE OFF .
Kalam frisked by American airlines at IGI airportBy: mahendra patel | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward The Act of 'INSULT' to the former President Mr. Kalam has already occurred and no punishments can undo it.I would first want to blame the persons who made the travel arrangements . They should have discussed all these details just as they must have done while selecting his seat and food choices etc. It should also intrigue the people of India as to why would he travelled a foreign airline when Air India is offering similar or better product. Air India needs all the support of such eminent persons to boost its sagging morale. Air India has looked after all the VVIPs whether serving or retired in the best possible manner. Hon. Minister should inquire into this aspect and find out as to why Air India could not 'fly' him. New York and Newark airports are 1 hour apart.
