Kalpasar dam: Govt nod to PPP model

The state government has given its in principle approval for the Public-Private-Partnership model for its ambitious Kalpasar dam project in the Gulf of Khambhat.

The state government has given its in principle approval for the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model for its ambitious Kalpasar dam project in the Gulf of Khambhat. The decision was taken at a recently held meeting of the Project Expert Advisory Group (EAG).

“Though there are enough resources for the dam project, there are other utilities like transport, for which PPP will be the most convenient finance and operation model,” said M S Patel, secretary,Kalpasar.

Patel further said that the government has decided to construct a 100-metre wide and 30-km long road. “There will be 12 lanes, two rail lines and two utility lines, which will be used for pipelines and other purposes,” he said.

The road across the Gulf will reduce the distance between Bhavnagar and Surat by 136 km and travel time by nearly five hours. RITES will study feasibility for the rail corridor. The dam construction is expected to start in a year’s time and aimed to be completed by 2025.

The state government also aims to claim carbon credit for the Kalpasar project.
