Dealing the BJP a severe blow ahead of general elections, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, during whose rule the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992, today quit the party, saying he had been “humiliated and insulted” by the BJP leadership.

“I have quit the BJP for life. I was feeling suffocated. It was my political blunder to have rejoined the party,” said Kalyan Singh, once the Hindutva face of the BJP in UP. A party vice-president, he had stayed away from party activities for more than year. Today, he said the BJP leadership had refused to listen to his views on even a single Lok Sabha seat.

The 76-year-old leader from the backward Lodh community claimed that the BJP would not get “more than five seats in UP, plus or minus one” out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state. The BJP won 10 seats in the last Lok Sabha elections.

Though he maintained he would not float a new party nor join any other, he made it clear “I am not retiring from active politics.” He refused to discuss his future plans but confirmed that he had met SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav at his son Rajvir Singh’s house in New Delhi “for three hours”. He said SP general secretary Amar Singh too was present.

He thanked Mulayam Singh for offering his son a SP ticket. Asked whether Rajvir Singh and his aide Kusum Rai, also a BJP MP, too would quit the party, he said they were free to take their own decisions.

Kalyan who ?By: VK Sharma | 23-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Does it matter to a common India should politicians change parties like lizard changes colour ? In any case only 'Kalyan' they do is to their kith and kin. Our politicians have no scruples, ideology, party agenda or commitment to the country. We are living in the political culture of touts, charlatans, sycophants fed well by a corrupt system. And all of them want to ‘serve’ poor people. This has become a joke. And like creepers, our politicians will suck us for ever.God bless this country
Kalyan quits BJP....By: A.A.Choudhari | 21-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Very Good that Kalyan Singh quits BJP. Such power hungry politicians like Kalyan Singh are best fitted in SP with Mulayam and Amar. They do not represent any values but are only self-seeking usurpers of power by hook or by crook. Mulayam and Amar calling themselves Socialists do not have a modicum of Socialism in them. Mulayam with Chargesheet for disproportionate assets and Amar, Industrialist, who, denial apart was seeped in the Notes for Votes controversy. Kalyan can be best choice for such detestable alignment of leaders.
Kalyan quits BJP, Mulayam says none in UP can match his statureBy: sharath | 21-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward It will not effect for BJP in UP coming Parlament elcections..Coming Elections Definetly BJP will be going to form the Governament and MR.Advani is the PM.--Sharath Rao from AP(Karimnagar)
BlunderBy: Rehan | 21-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Surely SP has done a great blunder by taking Kalyan Singh who is directly responsible for demolition of Babri Masjid. SP will now face a music. I think Amar Sing formerly known as king maker has broken himself as king breaker. He Invited Sanjay Dutt in SP who is now a days mad in Manayta's addiction. Its iindirectly BSP's gain in UP. Lets see what happened next.
Kalyan SinghBy: Vaid S C K | 21-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Leaders like Kalyan Singh should learn some good things from USA. After bitter ight over nomination for the Presidentship, Hillary Clinton quitely realised her weak status and backed whole heartedly Obama. Results are before every one. But on the contrary, dissidents not only dig their own graves but also harm their own party with whom they have served for may years. When leaders of political party would learn?
