The joint team of the Special Task Force (STF), the Special Operation Group (SOG) and the Nawabganj police, arrested four persons in connection to the Mandvi Singh murder case on Wednesday night.
They also claimed to have recovered the stolen gold chain and a countrymade pistol from their possession. The four arrested have been identified as Jitendra Rathod, Mohsin, Sonu Valmiki and Santosh Awasthi.
The family of the scientist/assistant professor Mandvi, however, has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.
Mandvi’s husband Anil Kumar Singh said the recovered gold chain did not belong to his wife and accused the police of harassing him.
“Between 10.30 pm and 11.30pm on Wednesday, several senior police officers and constables arrived at my C-24 campus residence at Chandra Shekhar Azad (CSA) University of Agriculture and Technology and put pressure on me to identify the chain,” said Anil.
The ASP (Crime), O P Singh, however, said: “All the arrested have confessed their crime and we are convinced,”
On September 14, Mandavi Singh, scientist/assistant professor at CSA University of Agriculture and Technology was shot dead while she was on her way back to her home, situated at CSA premises.
While Jitendra, Mohsin and Sonu were involved in the crime, Santosh is a jeweller who had purchased the gold chain from them for Rs 5,000. Suraj, the mastermind behind the crime, is still absconding.
Sonu and Jitendra work as labourers and were neighbours in the Kalyanpur area. Sonu had introduced Jitendra to Mohsin and Suraj. Facing financial crunch, the four planned to steal a gold chain inside the CSA premises.
