Adding a new dimension to the death of Punjab cooperation minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh in a road accident in Kharar last month, former Punjab chief minister and Punjab Congress Campaign Committee head Captain Amarinder Singh raised several doubts on Tuesday over the manner in which the minister died.
“The manner in which the accident occurred raises several suspicions in a reasonable mind,” said Amarinder while addressing a public rally in support of his wife and sitting MP Preneet Kaur, who is seeking re-election from Patiala, in Zirakpur on Tuesday.
Calling Kanwaljit as “very honest” leader, the senior Congress leader said the Akali leadership was feeling insecure in the presence of Kanwaljit who held a massive base in the public across the state.
“Sensing trouble to the future of top Akali leaders, a conspiracy seemed to have been hatched to eliminate Kanwaljit,” said Amarinder.
He promised to hold a high-level probe into the circumstances leading to the death of Kanwaljit, if the Congress was voted to power in Punjab.
Accusing the Badals of “amassing disproportionate assets”, the former CM said the present regime may slap as many cases it can against him but he will expose their “misdeeds” on returning to power.
Amarinder sought votes for Preneet to strengthen the hands of Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi at the Centre and getting the honour of re-electing a Sikh Prime Minister.
He said that he was aiming to win all the 13 Lok Sabha seats for the Congress in Punjab while claiming that the party was united to defeat the SAD-BJP combine in the ensuing polls.
