  • To break the deadlock between the Congress and the Left parties over the contentious Indo-US Nuclear deal, United Progressive Alliance leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has decided to make a trip to the national capital in the first week of July.

Talking to the media on the sidelines of a party function here on Thursday, the DMK president said he would call on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the deal.

The exact dates of the visit, however, have not been finalised.

“I have been talking to both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi on this issue everyday,” said Karunanidhi, who had earlier announced that he would go to New Delhi on June 25 or June 26.

However, this visit did not materialise as the Chief Minister was busy with other engagements in the state.

Earlier this week, talking at a public function in Tiruchirappalli, DMK treasurer and senior minister Arcot N Veerasamy had announced that the party chief would visit Delhi in the second week of July.

Party insiders say the visit could have been advanced in view of the worsening relationship between the Left parties and the alliance leader Congress after the latest round of discussions on the deal held in Delhi on Wednesday.
