Showing no sign of tension, prime accused in Mumbai terror attack case Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab smiled throughout the court proceedings as two witnesses testified that the terrorist was 21 years old and not a juvenile as claimed by him.
As the Jail Superintendent showed records to point out that Kasab had given his age as 21 years when he was brought to the Arthur Road prison, the accused gave a broad smile and did not show any signs of discomfort or tension.
Again, when another witness, a doctor, identified him in the open court, he stood up in the dock and smiled. Kasab sat down only after Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told him to be seated.
At one point of time, the judge M L Tahilyani asked Kasab, "You are smiling at your lawyer. Do you want to tell him anything?".
"Yes Sir," replied Kasab.
With the permission of the judge, defence lawyer Abbas Kazmi went to Kasab and talked to him for five minutes during which proceedings were adjourned.
When the defence lawyer returned to his seat, Kasab also sat on the bench in the dock and appeared to be at ease. Tuesday’s proceedings were crucial for Kasab's defence as the prosecution had sought an inquiry to establish that he was a major and not a juvenile.
