Keep a watch on Guru: EC tells state

Deputy commissioners have been asked to keep a watch on the movement of D S Guru,Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,following orders issued by state Chief Secretary SC Agrawal in the light of a directive of the EC.

Also,a report from state home department has been sought on state DGP P S Gill.

All deputy commissioners in the state have been directed to see that if Guru uses his influence during any official and election related work. They have also been asked to check if he was indulging in any political activity with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections,where he may contest on a SAD ticket.

The development took place after the EC,in a letter dated August 20,asked Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Kusamjit Sidhu to keep a watch on the two officers following complaints about their alleged political activities.

Before the visit of the full team of EC to Chandigarh a few days ago,Guru had been visiting Barnala district on one pretext or the other. The district falls under the Bhadaur Assembly segment,from where he is tipped to contest the Assembly elections.

Guru had made several trips to Barnala in June and July. In the last week of June,he spent four days there,meeting people and reviewing the development projects. In July,he again visited Barnala and one by one,met 30 village panchayats in Bhadaur. There,he asked them the fate of the projects,which were passed by the chief minister during his Sangat Darshan in January. In mid-July,he spent a few days there as chief minister’s Sangat Darshan was being held. He again visited the area in the last week. But after the visit of the EC team,Guru has not paid a visit to the area.

Meanwhile,the CEO has asked the home department to submit a report on a complaint lodged with the EC against the DGP,which alleged that he had given around 35 gunmen to several people in Moga.

In a report to the CEO,the Moga deputy commissioner stated that around 35 gunmen has been issued by the district police in the recent past. The CEO has now asked the home department to give details of gunmen given to people. After the CEO receives the report,it will be forwarded to the EC,said sources. Gill also used to visit Moga every week and stayed for at least two to three days. But after a visit by the EC team,he has not gone to the area.
