In a world where seeing is believing, there is nothing to compare with getting live visuals from your home or office when you are away. Don’t be surprised when we say you can now do this 24x7 on your mobile using a new surveillance technique called Omnisurv. The technology can help you see what your employees are up to when you are not in the office or keep a watch on your house when you are away on a long family holiday in the hills, all on your regular mobile phone.
Omnisurv, developed by Samridhi Automations with technology from Wientech Systems, is different in the sense that it does not need a PC or TV at the receiving end. After installation of the device, which includes an analog camera and digital video recorder connected to a broadband, the customer gets a URL with log-in and password. The visuals are then beamed to the user’s mobile over a GPRS connection. If something unusual happens, the system can even send an SMS alert. However, there is no audio support at present.
The visuals are very fast, clear and easy to see on mobile phones. On the receiving end, it takes just a couple of seconds for the link to start beaming visuals on the phone. That doesn’t mean it requires a 3G connection and can work on a normal GSM connection with GPRS.
“That was the challenge… getting good quality video over a low bandwidth network like GPRS… lot of companies had attempted it (unsuccessfully) earlier,” says Vivek Mudgil, founder-director of Wientech, who developed the technology along with a group of IITians. He claims their technique is safe as video can be seen only on a particular mobile and can’t be hacked into as the visuals are streamed in encrypted format.
