A team of five police officers from Kochi arrived in Noida on Monday to investigate the drowning of Justine John Xavier, the first-year B.Tech student of Amity University, who drowned on September 3. The family had reportedly lodged a case against the University expressing doubts over the boy’s drowning.
Joseph Antony, Justin’s cousin, said that his death due to drowning is unbelievable. “Justine had received many awards in swimming. He is a passout of Montfort School, Yercaud, Chennai, and was an excellent swimmer. Drowning could never be a reason for his death,” Antony had said when he came to collect the body.
Savita Mehta, public relations officer, Amity University said, “I have no information of these officials coming to the university for investigation.”
Anil Samanai, station house officer, Sector-39 police station confirmed that a team from Kochi had arrived for investigation.
“The police officials are recording statements of those who were present on that morning,” he added.
Justine had talked to his parents around 1.30 am on September 3 and chatted with friends and listened to music till 2.30 am. In the morning, he and his roommates had gone jogging and swimming. Sayan Roy, his roommate, was reportedly with him when the incident occurred. Both were standing when Roy felt something touching his legs. He bent down and saw Justine coiled around his legs, he had told the police at the time.
The police, however, maintained that Justin died of drowning.
