Maharashtra State Police (MSP) packed a punch so fearsome that a depleted Bombay Gymkhana outfit were reduced to almost mere spectators as the cops outfit recorded a comprehensive 4-1 victory in a Super Division match of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) League at the University Sports ground,Marine Lines on Monday.
The man who walked away with most plaudits for the victors not surprisingly was hat-trick hero,Amjad Khan. Khan exhibited plenty of dash, combined with some precise finishing while scoring his teams opening three goals. His onslaught was too hot to handle for the Bombay Gymkhana defense who faltered almost every time the MSP striker stormed into their half with the ball at his feet. And it was Khan’s three consecutive strikes that abruptly shot down Bombay Gymkhana’s challenge.
Imran Shaikh netted the fourth goal for the policemen to seal the deal. All this, however, after Zubin Anklesaria handed the lead for Bombay Gymkhana in the early going.
Taking the field without many of their regular players, most of whom were out of station, the gymkhana outfit from South Mumbai found the going extremely tough against the fitter and robust state cops with Khan leading the way. They did manage to keep pace with their rivals initially though and even drew first blood thanks to Anklesaria’s strike but soon ran out of steam and finally caved in against MSP’s rampant offense.
It was against the run of play that Bombay Gymkhana forged ahead when Anklesaria found the net with a snap try in the 37th minute. However, their joy was short-lived as MSP restored parity only two minutes later through the effort of Khan, who netted the first of his three goals.
Two minutes later,Khan was again in the thick of action by scoring the second goal to give the cops a 2-1 half-time lead.
Not satisfied with the two strikes,Khan continued to search for more goals and was rewarded for his efforts with the crucial third goal in the 57th minute to complete his memorable feat. Imran Shaikh rounded off the tally by scoring MSP’s fourth goal in the 63rd minute. Meanwhile,Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC),not for the first time, failed to report for their match. All PIFA Colaba FC had to do to ensure that they stood a chance of full points on Monday, thanks to BMFC’s no-show for the umpteenth time.
An MDFA official said that BMFC had accepted the schedule of matches handed out to them but did not inform about their inability to report for todays game. They havent even telephoned that they will not be reporting for the match. We will write to them and then let the committee take necessary action, he stated.
PIFA Colaba FC could stand to be awarded the match, with three points and three goals.
Results: Super Div: M S Police 4 (Amjad Khan 3 [hat-trick,Imran Shaikh) bt Bombay Gymkhana 1 (Zubin Anklesaria); Elite Div: PIFA Colaba FC got a walkover against BMFC.
