Marriageable age limit be lowered to curb rapes, say Khap Mahapanchayats

The Khap Mahapanchayats in Haryana, which are known for their controversial and draconian laws in the interiors of the Jatland, have now suggested measures to curb the instances of rapes.

A few of the leaders of Khap Mahapanchayat has suggested that the marriageable age limit be lowered, to curb the increasing instances of rapes. "The television and movies, mobile phones, Internet etc. are majorly responsible for all these things. The early age at which the children get exposure about vulgarity shown on all these mediums of entertainment, spoil them further. The vulgarity has led to circumstances where the youngsters could not handle the attraction towards the opposite sex and many times force themselves on the opposite sex, resulting in rapes and gangrapes", Khap Mahapanchayat spokesperson Sube Singh told Indian Express.

To deal with the growing instances of rapes and gangrapes, the Khap Mahapanchayat has decided to hold a meeting in Sonepat district's Gohana village, where a teenage girl was raped last week by four youngsters.

Incidentally, the khap leaders had been in news for all sorts of controversial statements in the past as well. About a week ago, a newly married couple was banned for the entire life from entering their village, and the villagers were ordered to implement a social boycott of both the families of bride and groom, since the couple married in the same gotra.

Haryana khap leaders had also been inviting the wrath from various investigating agencies and courts, for their 'arbitrary orders and rulings' against the provisions of the Indian legal system.

The Khap Mahapanchayat is likely to invite representatives of various khaps, active in Haryana, and discuss the issue of rapes and gangrapes among the villagers. "We shall be holding such a discussion soon, but no date has been finalised as of now," Sube Singh added.
