Khar should have met Omar Abdullah: Pillai

If leaders from India would meet leaders in PoK,I am sure Pakistan would not have liked it: Pillai.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar should have met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah instead of Hurriyat leaders as he is the real representative of the people, former Home Secretary G K Pillai said on Thursday.

“The leaders from Pakistan usually meet Hurriyat leaders. It is no big deal but it would have been useful had she (Khar) met Omar Abdullah rather than meeting the separatists who represent just a section of the society,” Pillai said.

Khar’s meeting with separatists, soon after her arrival and before talks with her counterpart S M Krishna, has not gone down with the foreign policy establishment in New Delhi, which thought of it as a “bad idea”.

“If some leaders from India would have wanted to meet some leaders in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK),I am sure Pakistan would not have liked it as they are not functionaries of democracy,” Pillai said on the sidelines of a function on homeland security in New Delhi.

He said if Khar wanted to gauge the diverse opinion, she should have even talked to the various political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reacting to India’s unhappiness over her meeting with the separatists,Khar had said on Wednesday,“I don’t think this (meeting) was anything new. Every Pakistan Foreign Minister who has been visiting India has been engaging with them.”
