A 40-year-old man alleging one of his kidneys was removed without his knowledge by a nursing home in Shahdara,in Northeast Delhi, registered a complaint at the Shahdara police station on Sunday.
A case under Act 18 (transplantation of human organs) was registered.
According to the complaint,Devender Singh Gupta,a clerk with the UP transport department, had gone to Shanti Nursing Home in Shahdara in 2001 after he was diagnosed with stones in urinary tract. He was treated at the clinic and the stones were removed, a police officer said.
The complaint further said,in January 2009,Singh fell ill and went to Moolchand Hospital for a check up. The hospital, after conducting various tests, informed Gupta that his left kidney was missing and 10 per cent of his right kidney was malfunctioning. He was told he would need to be put on dialysis and would require a transplant.
He came to know that his kidney had been removed during the surgery conducted for kidney stones, the officer said.
Gupta then registered an FIR with the Sahibabad police in UP. No action was, however, taken as the case came under Delhi Police jurisdiction.
Then I went to Shahdara police but they refused to register a case. Since then I have written letters to the Health department, the President and the Prime Minister, Gupta told Newsline.
He then went to SDM Shahadra who conducted an inquiry and directed the police to take up the matter, a police officer said.
The investigations have started. It is too early for us to say anything yet. We are also looking for any similar complaints by other people, the officer said.
According to the police,Dr Rajendra Pal who operated on Gupta in Shanti Nursing Home and Jayachand, owner of the nursing home, are absconding.
