Asserting that she had no intention of joining politics at present, India’s first woman IPS officer and Magsaysay award winner Kiran Bedi today said she was more interested in social work and public service than politics.
Bedi was in Amritsar today to promote ‘No Marks’ cream of Ozone Ayurvedics, an FMCG arm of Ozone Group, of which she is the brand ambassador.
“I may contest five years later, but at the moment time is not right for me to join politics,” she said, adding that if she jumps in the fray, she could end up being a small voice in a system dominated by a horde of corrupt politicians.
“I am at present trying to help a large number of people daily through social service and the three projects that I am running,” she said.
She refused to comment on political offers that she had received for contesting the Lok Sabha elections. However, when asked whether she would join the Rajya Sabha if nominated, Bedi said she might consider that option, as it was based on the merit of the person.
She expressed her resentment over growing political interference in the police force.
Ruing the poor condition of the roads’ network in Amritsar and the unruly traffic, she stressed the need for good governance.
SC Sehgal, Chairman and Managing Director, Ozone Group, also addressed the gathering. Bedi also visited Citizens’ Forum Vidya Mandir at Maqboolpura, a school for the children of drug addicts being run by her husband Brij Bedi.
