On a day when he was advised a 4 to 6 weeks’ rest to recover from a chronic shoulder injury,Kolkata Knight Rider skipper Gautam Gambhir took field for the crucial Eliminator against Mumbai Indians. With KKR finishing on the losing side, the game not only proved to be Gambhir’s last in IPL IV,but he is also likely to miss the India ‘s tour to West Indies for which he was named the ODI skipper.

As reported by The Indian Express on Tuesday, the KKR physio Andrew Leipus informed the BCCI that the MRI scan of Gambhir’s right shoulder revealed serious damage. Not just that,Leipus’s email to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan also informed that the Indian opener was carrying a groin injury that needed rehabilitation at the earliest.

Interesting, after the game Gambhir said he wasn’t aware about the physio’s assessment of his injury. “I haven’t got the report yet. I still need to speak to the physio yet. I will do that after I reach the dressing room because he never wanted to discuss with me before the match,” he said.

But Gambhir did speak about the discomfort while fielding. “It’s (the shoulder) hurting me,I can’t throw. During the last game I fell while sliding. After that I threw one ball and then went for an MRI scan.”

The BCCI,meanwhile,is miffed since it was kept in dark about the injury. Sources with the Board say that they were informed about the seriousness of the injury just two hours prior to the game. BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said that the board has “just received Leipus’s report, and they would first study before taking any further course of action.”

According to sources, the BCCI might even ask Gambhir why he took field despite the fact that the physio was aware about the nature and seriousness of the injury. Leipus in his letter has mentioned that Gambhir first injured his shoulder during the World Cup final against Sri Lanka but the player chose to ignore the warning signs.
