In order to decongest Canal East Road and West Canal Road,the Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department has taken up a Rs 3.5-crore project to construct two bridges over the circular canal. We have taken up several projects to upgrade the citys infrastructure. The construction of the bridges will commence soon. We have more transport projects in the pipeline, said Ashok Bhattacharya,state Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development,while speaking at the foundation laying ceremony organised by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). A flyover over Vivekananda Road has been approved by the Centre and Rs 150 crore has been sanctioned for the project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme. The state governments share in the project will be Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore, Bhattacharya added. He said one more flyover connecting the Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass with the VIP road is on the cards. As a nodal agency of the state government,all the projects will be executed by the KMDA. The two bridges over the canals will be 40 metres long and six metres wide. The bridges will be able to carry small vehicular traffic, said a senior KMDA official. Tuhin Bera,MMiC (Roads) said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will construct a road from Gajanabhi bridge to EM Bypass soon.
