Incessant rain continued on Thursday and several areas of south Bengal were inundated due to the downpour.
Kolkata,Sunderbans, coastal areas of East Midnapore and pockets of North 24-Parganas received heavy rainfall. Rainfall in the last 24 hours had been recorded at 47.7 mm.
Alipore Met office said the forecast for the next 24 hours is overcast weather with intermittent spells of rain. Conditions might improve in the second half of Friday in Kolkata but other parts of south Bengal will receive heavy rainfall.
Different areas of the city like Alipore,Narkeldanga,Picnic Garden,Behala,Kidderpore Salt,Central Avenue and several areas of Salt Lake were submerged but Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities claim that they were prepared to tackle the situation and had done well.
There were no problems at all as far as drainage was concerned. All the pumping stations were working fine and water was pumped out soon. We had done very well to tackle the situation, said Rajib Deb,MMIC (drainage).
He brushed aside allegations that pre-monsoon de-silting of canals was not done properly. If that had been the case, the city would have been flooded in the last two days rain. That has not happened, he said.
