Students of four schools in Kolkata are getting a unique opportunity of a brush with German art, culture and language.

Birla High School (Boys Section),Don Bosco School (Park Circus),The Heritage School and Modern High School for Girls have forged a partnership with the German government under the initiative “Schools: Partners for the future”.

“The schools have been identified for their academic excellence. These schools have also shown eagerness to work with the German Cultural Centre in the city,” said Falk Schleicher, the project officer of the initiative.

Under the programme, the schools have been teaching their students German language, art, literature and culture, which the officials at Max Muller Bhavan say has achieved a considerable success in a short span. Twelve students from these schools also participated in a three-week camp in Germany from June to July.

Guenter Wehrmann, the German Consul General in Kolkata,on Friday formally unveiled a plaque at all these schools, declaring them as official partners with the German government.

Designated teachers of these schools are undergoing nearly 18-month training in German language and teaching methodologies. The Max Muller Bhavan will arrange film and theatre festivals for the children of these institutions.

Schleicher said in 2010 they will organise a German theatre workshop focusing on characters of Indian and German myths so that the students can relate with the culture of both countries.

The schools have responded with vigour to the collaboration. Modern High School for Girls has set up a Goethe Room to promote better understanding of German culture among the students.

“Our children have learnt a lot from the programme. We are offering German as the third language in Classes VI-VIII,” said Seema Saproo, principal of The Heritage School.

According to the authorities at the German Cultural Centre, nearly 50 schools in the country are part of the project.
