Koodankulam unit weeks from kicking off,Jaya plays up power demand again

Reiterating her demand that the entire electricity generated from the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant should be allocated to power-starved Tamil Nadu,Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa shot off another letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.

The reminder came at a time when authorities are gearing up to load nuclear fuel in the first unit,expressing hope that power generation will begin in the next few weeks.

Jayalalithaa had raised the demand first in an earlier letter on March 31,after having broken months of impasse that surrounded the commissioning of the project due to protests by locals and activists.

Stating that the allotted 925 MW from a total of 2,000 MW to be generated from the two units was not enough to meet the immediate necessities faced by the state,she had told the PM that Tamil Nadu “requires and deserves” the power.

Now,as the officials of the atomic power plant are set to load fuel in the next few days and the first unit is expected to reach criticality in 20-odd days after that,the Tamil Nadu CM sent the reminder raising the “absolutely justified demand of the state”.
