With their upset win over defending champions Rajasthan Royals in the opening game,Bangalore Royal Challengers have started in style. Coach Ray Jennings,in an email interview, talks about his new skipper, his team and the road ahead. Excerpts:
•How important is KPs presence to the team?
•He is a fighter and a determined cricketer, and just the kind of player that RCB missed last year. His style of play is unique and unconventional, and will certainly have a positive impact on our performance.
•But what happens when he leaves after six matches?
•The IPL is structured in such a way that international players will come and go during the tournament. Its a challenge all teams have to face. KP will be missed but its up to the rest of the group to perform well under pressure.
•Besides KP,who has roots in South Africa,Kallis and Boucher are in the line-up. How vital will inputs from these local players be?
•Five of our internationals are from here,so their knowledge of the conditions will be crucial. In addition, the majority of our backroom staff are South African as well, with myself,Grant Morgan, and Eric Simmons, which does give us a bit of an advantage in terms of tactics and gameplans.
•How do you look at your chances for this season?
•We just need to take every ball as it comes. This format changes very quickly, and any side on their day is in with a chance. However, our side is extremely well prepared, and I can assure you of a very enthusiastic outfit.
•What have you discussed at nets session before the tournament?
•We are focussing on the basics, and maintaining an extremely high standard of training. The guys are focussed, and keeping their intensity levels at the highest.
•Is your side ready for some experiments during the IPL?
•Twenty20 is unpredictable and things change very quickly. We have a few unique plans for certain situations.
