The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a fresh notice to the Centre, seeking its explanation on reportedly exempting the Russian company involved in setting up of Kudankulam nuclear power plant from any liability to pay damages in the event of an accident in Unit 1 and 2 of the plant.

A Bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra, which is also hearing a related petition on the adherence to safety standards at the plant before its commissioning, agreed to examine the aspect of liability by the Russian company.

"We will issue a notice in this matter too. Let the government file its reply within three weeks," said the Bench when advocate Jayant Bhushan pointed out that the Russian company was discharged of any liability to pay damages and hence, in case of any untoward event, tax payers' money will be used to make good the losses.
