Kuki returns home to complete degree

Ranjit Singh Gill alias Kuki, who is serving a life sentence for the double murder of Congress leader Lalit Maken and his wife Geetanjli, returned home to Ludhiana on Thursday night.

Ranjit Singh Gill alias Kuki, who is serving a life sentence for the double murder of Congress leader Lalit Maken and his wife Geetanjli, returned home to Ludhiana on Thursday night.

Kuki was lodged in Tihar Jail, following his surrender on March 16 after the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition for reconsideration of his sentence. According to Kuki,“The police have allowed me two-month parole to complete my MSc in Plant Breeding. My parole ends in the first week of June.”

He adds: “Now,it has become harder for me to resign myself to my fate. I have spent 17 years in jail without a single parole and the days went by easily as I was serving a sentence. But spending these 17 days in jail was much tougher as I simply could not resolve myself to the fact that I was sent back to jail once again.”

Kuki’s plea for clemency is pending with the Delhi Government despite Avantika Maken, the lone child of the slain Maken couple, providing a written statement to the authorities stating that he should be given a chance to move on in life.

On a recent visit to the city,Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit said a decision could be taken only after elections. She had added that post elections, she would constitute a committee to look into the matter.

Commenting on this,Kuki said: “I have full faith in the judiciary but I hope that things move a little faster. My parole ends in June and the elections will finish in May,so there is not much time at hand.”
