Almost a fortnight after the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition to reconsider his life sentence, former militant Ranjit Singh Gill, alias Kuki, surrendered before the Tihar Jail officials at 10 am.

It was learnt that Kuki surrendered without any documents,as the courts order are yet to be served on him.

KTS Tusli, counsel for the former militant, said,“Much water has flown under the bridge and Kuki is now a transformed person. As he is a law-abiding citizen,he did not wait for the papers to be served on him.”

Tulsi, however, added,“We will shortly file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court, and hope to get some reprieve.” Kuki, son of a well-known wheat breeder and former Vice-Chancellor of PAU Dr Khem Singh Gill, was convicted for the murders of trade union leader Lalit Maken and his wife Gitanjli Maken at their Kirti Nagar residence in New Delhi on July 31,1985.

Kuki was awarded life term and he has spent almost 19 years in jail before being granted a bail in 2004,when he had appealed in the court that he be allowed to meet his mother who was dying of cancer at that time. Since then Kuki was on bail. Meanwhile,Kuki’s application for clemency is also pending before the Delhi Government.

This despite the fact that Avantika Maken, the lone child of the slain couple, had publicly forgiven Kuki.
