  • Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble left his mark on the Royal Challengers Bangalore with his captaincy.

There are some uncanny similarities between Anil Kumble, the India Test captain, and Anil Kumble, Bangalore’s IPL captain. He wasn’t favourite when he took over the reins of the Test team after Rahul Dravid stepped down. Then, the selectors decided Mahendra Singh Dhoni was too raw, while no one else seemed keen on the job.

In the IPL, it was widely reported that Jacques Kallis would take over from Kevin Pietersen once the England basher left the squad to join the national team. Once again, it was a late call to give Kumble the skipper’s cap, as Kallis’s slow start in the tournament meant he wasn’t a certainty in the playing XI.

However, the one thing his two stints had in common was that they were unexpected success stories, both with heart-breaking endings. Kumble led the Test side to a successful tour of Australia and grew comfortably into the role of senior statesman. Then, midway through the final day of a Test match in Delhi against Australia, he decided he didn’t have the will to fight on.

For a long time on Sunday night, it seemed like he would end this T20 stint as skipper by lifting the IPL trophy — but a late crumble saw his team fall short by six agonising runs.

“It would have been nice if we would have won today. When captaincy came after Kevin had to go back, that was a challenge for me and it really helped my game. Twenty20 is different because it is really fast paced. In that sense I thought I did pretty well,” said Kumble, under whom the team won seven out of 10 games. “Personally, it was very good, but from the team’s perspective it was brilliant.”

    ... contd.

Kumble is not fitBy: Raj Thackrey | 26-May-2009 Reply | Forward Those who argue for his inclusion in the T20 squad are mistaken. No matter how good Kumble is he will always end up on loosing side. You cannot expect loosers to be included in any team.
“I think Twenty20 is ideally suited for us” - Well said.By: Dr. Cajetan Coelho | 26-May-2009 Reply | Forward Anil opened the bowling and was an instant success. In just four overs he could draw the desired road map for the match. Great captain, shrewd world class bowler.
JUMBO'S DAYS ARE NOT OVER YET!By: SULTAN AKHTAR PATEL | 26-May-2009 Reply | Forward Anil "Jumbo" Kumble should be included as a last minute reinforcement to our T20 World Cup Championship Squad. If we are hard and serious about retaining this honor, Kumble is the key to this mission that is gonna start from the first week of June 09 in England. Looking into his performance in the just-concluded IPL2, Kumble has always been the late riser to blossom and bloom for long enough. He takes time in picking up the heat and once he picked up, there is no stopping either. Kumble's vast experience as a senior cricketer and his level headed character with lots of ingenuities up his sleeves should definitely stand in good stead in this championship that we hold dear! Grapevine has it that Zaheer might skip due to injury he bore in IPL2. Kumble can be an ideal replacement both with ball and bat. BCCI shan't write off Kumble so fast after his retirement. He is still capable of raising his head strong and hard to gain India a few plumes yet again!
