In countries like the US,the percentage of patients suffering from heart diseases has gone down due to an increase in awareness and dietary habits. This is yet to be seen in India, said Dr Inderjit Gill, who is a staff cardiothoracic surgeon with the Cleveland Clinics Heart Centre at Cleveland.
While throwing light on various kinds of heart diseases and required precautions at the Chandigarh Press Club on Friday,Dr Gill said that though medical technology has advanced in countries like India, still the percentage of people suffering from heart ailments is high.
This is particularly due to lack of awareness and eating habits which are 0unhealthy for the heart. The consumption of fats is on the higher side in the northern region, the doctor said.
People in US are very much aware of their daily calorie intake. Even before buying any eatable, they check the calorie content on the pack. This is very much lacking in India. Also, smoking makes a person susceptible to heart diseases, added Dr Gill.
He has presented and published papers in journals extensively on topics related to minimally invasive coronary surgery and on delayed operative intervention in the management of heart diseases.
