  • Members of Mohalla Sanitation Committees on Tuesday staged a protest rally outside MC Zone-A office. The members urged the MC to either regularise their posts or recruit them on daily wages.

It needs to be mentioned that about a year ago, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had announced to dissolve the Mohalla Sanitation Committees, rendering the staff on the committees’ rolls unemployed.

Lakshman Dravid, leader of the members of Mohalla Sanitation Committees, said, “Jalandhar MC has regularised the members of mohalla sanitation committees, but Ludhiana MC is yet to take a decision. About 3,200 employees are working through mohalla sanitation committees, who are collectively being paid salary worth Rs 11 crore per annum salary and if they are kept on daily wages their salary will be hiked from existing Rs 2,860 to Rs 4500. “

However information revealed that if MC kept the employees on the rolls, they will be recruiting only 1,200 and hence the rest would be expelled. But Dravid is advocating to keep all of them on daily wages, but this will cost MC a lot.

However the committee members, through a memorandum, have asked the Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura to take a decision soon.
