Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has declared a record ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each of those killed in Friday’s accident at a level-crossing in Moga, Punjab, in which a train hit a bus, leaving 18 people dead. The critically injured will get Rs 50,000 each, and those with minor injuries Rs 15,000 each. The minister has also announced free medical aid for the injured and promised a job for one family member of each of those killed. He added that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has already been asked to probe into the causes leading to the accident. “If it’s found that the level-crossing gate was opened by a railway employee, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder will be immediately initiated against the guilty and the person will be immediately sacked,” he said. He further added that preliminary findings of the CRS will be submitted to him by Friday evening and that he has instructed the Railway Board chairman to visit the spot. He said the ministry was assessing the cost and manpower required to man 35,000 unmanned level-crossings throughout the country.
