Lancet study rings alarm over anaemia prevalence in India

“India continues to have a severe anemia burden,” said the journal. Dr S V Subramanian,professor of Population Health and Geography,Harvard University,and one of the lead researchers,told The Indian Express,“This analysis highlights the social patterning of anemia by socio-economic status,and education in several low-income and middle-income countries,including India.”

In this paper,the researchers reviewed the epidemiology,clinical assessment,pathophysiology and consequences of anaemia in low-income and middle-income countries. The analysis showed that anaemia was “disproportionately concentrated in low socio-economic groups”,and that maternal anaemia was strongly associated with child anaemia. “Data from the latest 2005/6 NFHS survey estimates the prevalence of 55.3% among women of reproductive age (and 53.2% in non-pregnant non-lactating women) and 69.5% in children under 5 in India,” said The Lancet.

Antrix moves SC over arbitration on Devas

New Delhi: Antrix Corporation,the commercial arm of ISRO,has moved the Supreme Court against proceedings initiated against it by Devas Multimedia before the International Court of Arbitration (ICA) in London. Devas had moved the international court in July after Antrix aborted a Rs 1,000 crore deal to lease rare S-band spectrum to it.
