The UT Administration was forced into action on Tuesday after a sessions court in Chandigarh attached the government vehicles of senior UT functionaries for the administration’s failure to make payments in land acquisition cases.

The lower court attached the official vehicles of UT home secretary,UT finance secretary and deputy commissioner prompting the Chandigarh Administration to start the process of making payments in all the cases.

Sources in the UT Administration said that due to paucity of funds, the compensation amount in the land acquisition cases could not be paid. “Now,after the administration has received sufficient funds, the payments will be made soon,” the official added.

The compensation money which runs into crores is to be paid to farmers and land owners. Though the administration had paid the compensation amount in one of the cases, more cases await compensation.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline,DC Mohammad Shayin said: “These orders are a routine procedure and we will make the payments soon”.

According to the recent orders, the administration owes Rs 28 lakh to Kajheri resident Gurnam Kaur and Rs 33 lakh to Paramjit Kaur. Earlier this year, failing to compensate farmers for a piece of land it had acquired in 1988 at Behlana village for the Chandigarh airport, the sessions court had attached four official cars and three bank accounts of the UT Administration. The administration had to pay around Rs 9 lakh as compensation. The compensation was later paid and the attached properties were released.
