Lane driving to be started on Purv Marg, Udyog Marg

After Jan Marg, the Chandigarh Administration is all set to implement lane driving on Purv Marg and Udyog Marg in the City Beautiful.

A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting held on Thursday between officials of the Administration. Also, it has been decided that lane driving will not be implemented on city roads which have only two lanes.

In another crucial decision, the Traffic Police officials and officials of the Administration have decided that the extreme left lane will be reserved only for buses and emergency vehicles. Taxis and auto rickshaws will also be allowed to ply.

On the middle and right lane, two wheelers, three and four wheelers will be allowed to ply. Overtaking will be allowed only from the extreme right side. Those overtaking from the left side will be challaned.

It has also been decided that bus drivers will be advised to drive on the left hand side on city roads which have two lanes. It was also noticed in the meeting that under the Motor Vehicles Act, there is no provision which makes it compulsory for the Administration to implement lane driving.

During the resumed hearing of a petition pertaining to implementation of traffic guidelines issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1998, the High Court on Friday directed the Administration to take effective steps to ameliorate the condition of cycle tracks.

On August 25, the High Court had asked the Chandigarh Administration to explain as to on which city roads lane driving would be implemented.

On August 6, after repeated directions from the High Court, lane driving was introduced on Jan Marg. As many as 524 challans were issued to those who violated the lane driving rules on Jan Marg till September.
