  • The Sri Lankan military said on Saturday that more than 80 separatist Tamil Tiger rebels were killed during two days of intermittent artillery fire in the north.

Soldiers were collecting the dead bodies from an area near their front defence line in Muhammalai, the de facto border that separates rebel and government-held territory, the Media Centre for National Security said on its website.

Sri Lanka's air force, meanwhile, destroyed a strategic rebel sea base in the north in overnight airstrikes, killing an unknown number of guerrillas, military spokesman Major Upali Rajapakse said.
