Lankan Army committed sexual crime during 2006-2012: HRW report

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has released a report on sexual violence in Sri Lanka during 2006-20012. The report gives a detailed account of alleged rape and sexual crimes in official and secret detention centres across the country during this period.

The HRW report comes within days of a picture showing LTTE chief Prabhakarn's son just moments before has was allgedly shot-dead in cold-blood, embrassed the Sri Lankan government. The documentray, which was aired on Britain's Channel 4, stood by the report.

Though Colombo has denied its role in the killing, the report has once against generated a heated debate on human rights violations by the Lankan Army during the 26-year long ethnic war with the LTTE.

The recent HRW report says men and women are alleged to have been raped for days. The report banks on first-person accounts to base its claim.

The report claims that rape and other sexual violence were committed by the Sri Lankan security forces during 2006-20012. HRW also alleges that it could not conduct research openly in the country because of restrictions by the government.
