Under fire for the Shillong jailbreak, Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang on Monday apologised to the public on the floor of the Assembly and said that the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) Government had nothing to hide and was not averse to a CBI investigation. "We are sorry to the people for what has happened The Government will go along with the wishes of the people,” he said.
With fingers being pointed at a politician-criminal-businessman nexus after Congress leader Thomas Nongtdu was accused of financing the jailbreak, Lapang assured the Assembly that “the Government has nothing to hide”.
Talking about the alleged involvement of Nongtdu, Lapang said: “Congress or no Congress, the law is the same for all.” He said the Government had “re-opened” the case against Nongtdu after concerns were raised over his unconditional release by the police.
Earlier, continuing his attack on the MUA Government over the jailbreak, former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP legislator P A Sangma said in the Assembly that “it was not a jailbreak but a simple walkout by the seven prisoners on May 30.”
