Police are yet to pin down the role of alleged Mumbai LeT chief Faizal Ataur Rehman Sheikh (30) in the serial blasts of Terrible Tuesday, but a bizarre coincidence has added another twist to the case—the chairman of the housing society where his family lives died on 7/11.
Javed Naseem Sheikh (52), a resident of Bandra, was in the first-class coach of the train in which a bomb exploded at the Matunga station.
But Faizal’s family doesn’t know much about Javed Sheikh. They also say they don’t know what Faizal—arrested by the Anti-Terrorist Squad along with his software programmer brother Muzamil (22) on Thursday—was up to for the last five years.
In fact, as both were remanded in police custody today till August 9, their sister told this paper from behind a curtain at their Mira Road flat: ‘‘He (Faizal) was not good at studies. Five years ago, he had a tiff with our father over this and walked out of home. He used to come visiting every two months. He wanted to know how we were doing, but didn’t say much about himself.’’
Their sister, who did not reveal her name, added: ‘‘We heard that he ran a readymade garments business in Bandra for a while, then had something to do with mobiles.’’
Faizal’s family shifted from Pune to Mira Road five years ago after his father Ataur Rehman Sheikh retired from his job as a calligrapher there. Muzamil joined a city college, another brother found a job abroad, said their sister. ‘‘Now, Muzamil’s career is ruined. Only a month ago, he had landed a job in Bangalore (with an American software major),’’ she said.
