Even as a number of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation departments engage in bringing out the annual Environment Status Report of the city, the subject does not seem to interest corporators. It is mandatory for the BMC to get an official approval from the general body of corporators before the document is made official. However, the ESR of the year 2009-10 is yet to be approved by the general body, even as the next one for the year 2010-11 is in its final stages. The reason: the approval of the ESR has been repeatedly pushed below in the meeting agenda and fails to ever come up for discussion in the house meeting.

An official from the BMC’s laboratory said many government agencies and educational institutions purchase the copy of the ESR every year for academic purposes. About 250 copies are sold every year.

“IIT-Bombay,Pune Municipal Corporation and MMRDA are some of the agencies who come forward to buy the report as it helps them in many ways. But this year,we had to turn them down as we cannot sell the report unless it is formally approved by the BMC’s general body,” the official said. He is hopeful that the general body will approve last year’s ESR along with this year’s ESR that will be presented by the end of July.

The ESR is a well researched report that gives a status of air quality, water quality, green cover and other problems pertaining to environment and civic amenities. Various departments of the BMC work towards it including the hydraulic engineering department, storm water drainage department, solid waste management department, gardens department etc.

Asked about the delay in the approval,Municipal Secretary Mrudula Kulkarni said she was unaware that the item has still not been passed. Standing Committee Chairman and Shiv Sena corporator Rahul Shewale too said that he was unaware that the proposal was yet to be passed.
