No change in woman’s caste post-marriage: HC

MUMBAI: In a significant judgment,the Bombay High Court has held that the caste of a woman born into a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe does not change after her marriage to a person from a forward caste. “The suffering of such a person is not wiped out by marriage to a person born in a forward caste and the SC/ST label continues notwithstanding marriage,” observed the court. The ruling came on Friday on a petition filed by one Rajendra Shrivastava who sought anticipatory bail after his wife,who is from a scheduled caste,accused him and her in-laws of “dowry harassment and casteist atrocities”.

50 Telangana activists held

HYDERABAD: Fifty activists of the Progressive Democratic Students’ Union (PDSU) were arrested on Saturday when they tried to storm into the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat here,raising slogans demanding creation of a separate Telangana state,police said. The activists,including PDSU President Ashok Kumar and Secretary Gautam Prasad,were taken into custody after they squatted in front of the main gate of the Secretariat preventing people from entering.The arrested activists have been taken to the Nampally police station.

Inspector held for ‘rape bid’ on junior

JAIPUR: A Jaipur reserve police inspector was arrested on Saturday afternoon following a complaint from a lady constable that he had tried to rape her. The 26-year-old victim claimed that the RI,Ram Pratap Yadav (55),first assaulted her and then tried to rape her,said police. He has been charged under Sections 354 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code for outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal assault,said Deputy SP,Jaipur,Sulesh Chowdhary.

Maldives Prez to attend Tamil meet

CHENNAI: Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on Saturday said he would attend the World Tamil Conference scheduled for June in Coimbatore. After meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at his residence,he told reporters that they discussed “how best we can cooperate among India and Maldives with the two having had very long and good relations”. Nasheed is on an official visit here.

PORT BLAIR: To foster a bond of friendship across the seas,a biennial conglomeration of Asia-Pacific maritime Navies would be organised here this February,Navy officials said on Saturday. ‘Milan’,the six-day event,which begins February 3,would see the participation of Australia,Bangladesh,Brunei,Cambodia,Indonesia,Malaysia,Myanmar,New Zealand,Philippines,Singapore,Sri Lanka,Thailand and Vietnam.
