Indian-American professor indicted for fraud in US

Washington: An Indian-American engineering professor, Manoj Kumar Jha, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for trying to defraud the National Science Foundation (NSF) of $700,000. A full-time professor at the Morgan State University, Jha, according to the seven count indictment, fraudulently obtained $200,000 in grant funds from the NSF's Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programme to fund a highway project, and attempted to obtain another $500,000 though the same programme.

Beijing: At least six people were killed and 18 others injured Saturday in a 25-vehicle pileup on an expressway in southwest China's Guizhou Province. The accident took place on the Hukun (Shanghai-Kunming) expressway in Anshun City.

Philippines: 12 killed in army clash

Manila: At least seven soldiers and five communist rebels were killed in a clash Saturday in a northern Philippine province, the military said. The soldiers were on a counter-insurgency patrol in Isabela province's San Guillermo township when they ran into 30 New People's Army guerrillas, triggering a clash.
