A CBI special court in Kochi on Monday dismissed CPM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayans petition, seeking a direction to the CBI to arraign Defence Minister A K Antony as a witness in the SNC Lavalin case.
Vijayan is the seventh accused in the case, pertaining to the alleged corruption in the renovation of three hydel power projects in Kerala
during his term as the electricity minister.
Judge K P Jyothinath said the petition would not stand legal scrutiny and is not suitable for such a direction. The court said investigating officer could go ahead with the probe and the arguments by the petitioner would not affect the future course of the case.
Vijayan had contended that the conspiracy for the deal had been initiated during the term of Congress leader G Karthikeyan as the power minister in 1996. Although the CBI could not find any evidence against Karthikeyan, the agency has begun a re-investigation into his role at the behest of the court. Vijayan demanded that as Antony had been the chief minister in 1996,he should be made a witness in the case.
