  • Unerlining the need of discipline in life, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Navin Chawla exhorted the students to work hard as it would pay significant dividends in their life.

Presiding over the valedictory function of 162nd Founders’ Day celebrations of the Lawrence School on Sunday, he said as future leaders, students needed a disciplined environment for achieving the targets.

Earlier, as the students completed the march past, rains played spoilsport forcing the school’s authorities to organise the function in Barne Hall.

Chawla, an alumnus of the school, said, “If I was asked to point out an important lesson I learnt in the school, I would say it was how to play the game of life.”

“We also learnt about truth and integrity, often in an unspoken manner through our teachers and housemasters. One could never discriminate students on the basis of caste, class or religious groups. One of the great strengths of the school was gender equality,” the CEC said.

Welcoming the chief guest, school Headmaster Praveen Vasisht listed the achievements of the school and said to make learning more interesting and effective, the school tied up with Educomp early this year to convert almost half of the classrooms into smart classrooms so that teachers used the latest technology.

“In last term we hit the headlines for wrong reasons——campus violence. Much of this is due to the feverish pace at which we are living—- too much of greed and unhealthy competition,” he said. Vasisht added every year a creative writing competition is held in the UK to encourage students to share their dreams and aspirations, and this year 36 out of 42 poems written by school’s students were published in ‘I have a Dream-2009’.
