Differences surfaced among members of the Bar Association of the Calcutta High Court a day before the week-long cease-work beginning Tuesday over the issue of shortages of judges. The decision for cease-work was taken at a Bar Association meeting on Friday.

But a section of Bar Association members has now decided to placea the proposal on Tuesday to reconsider the cease-work decision, which is likely to paralyse the judicial process at the Calcutta High Court from tomorrow, said Asish Roy, the previous general secretary of the Bar Association.

“The cease-work decision was taken in hasty manner,” said Roy, alleging the present committee has imposed the decision on its members.

According to Rana Mukherjee, the general secretary of the Bar Association, the decision was taken in the general body meeting and a majority of members endorsed the decision. “About 250-300 members attended the meeting. There might be a difference of opinion, but I cannot ignore the majority verdict,” he said.

Sovon Lal Hazra, the government pleader, said a token strike or symbolic cease-work could be called to press for the demand, but staying away for work was not legal, as per a Supreme Supreme Court verdict.
